Animal Rights vs. Animal Welfare
The question is Animal Rights or Animal Welfare? I think that everyone will agree that fair treatment of animals is important no one wants to see a creature suffer, but there is a difference between animal rights and the actual well being of the animals themselves. In this essay I will prove that what is needed in our society today is not animal rights, but instead animal welfare and education on animal welfare.
Animal Rights and animal welfare may sound like the same thing and in fact the do take the same side on some issues however there are a few key differences that set them apart. A true animal rights activist believes that Humans do not have the right to own or use an animal in any way (page 2Twelve Arguments). This means not eating meat wearing leather or using any animal products. They believe that not eating meat and not using animal products they are harming no animals, and they believe that this is the moral high ground that it is truly wrong; therefore they preach veganism. I would like for a minute to discuss veganism. This is using no animal products including eggs or other animal byproducts. This seems like it would be a great idea on the surface, however what needs to be considered is if a vegan does not use animal products what do they eat or wear? This may sound like a stupid question its plants of course, but where do these plants and vegetables come from? That may also sound like a dumb question fields of course, but now this question is not so dumb if vegetables come from fields and fields to produce have to be cleared and planted with those specific plants that we eat then what was on that land before it was cleared? The answer can vary from rabbits, birds, snakes, to any number of small life forms. Now I can speak from personal experience I have driven a tractor across a field and many small animals habitats are destroyed and they ultimately die because of it if they are not hit by the machinery its self it is a sad fact but an unavoidable one. If fields are cleared then animals die so if people eat meat or not animals are going to be sacrificed, and even if everyone in the U.S. became vegan and no large animals were killed it would mean ten times as much planting so more small animals will be killed. The simple fact is that for humans to live animals some animals must be sacrificed it’s just picking which ones is the issue (Hopkins).
Animal welfare is the most reasonable and effective cause to stand behind. Animal welfare is similar to animal rights, but with a major difference it condones the use of animals as long as it is humane (page 1 Lin). My feeling on the subject is that if animals have to be used so I can live then why fight it? Why not instead try to figure out a way to make animals lives better and cause less suffering?

The Jungle Book
“Somehow I can’t believe there are any heights that can’t be scaled by a man who knows the secret of making dreams come true. This special secret, it seems to me, can be summarized in four C’s. They are Curiosity, Confidence, Courage, and Constancy and the greatest of these is Confidence. When you believe a thing, believe it all the way, implicitly and unquestionably.”(Walt Disney) Walt Disney was one of the greatest and most successful animated film producers in the modern world and he gained his success by being a great believer in the “Secret”. The reason that this has any real bearing on the lives of people in today’s world is that in every Walt Disney film he imparted his words of wisdom about the secret and about life. The movie that I would like to discuss is one that has been one of my favorites ever sense I was a child, and that movie is “The Jungle Book”. In this 1967 film Disney infuses his secret to success in every aspect of the film including the Songs, the characters, and the plot.
The songs in this classic movie are the heart and soul of the story; therefore it makes sense that the meaning and the moral of these songs reflect Walt Disney’s views about life and the secret. The Most emphasized song in the film is “The Bare Necessities”. Here is an excerpt from that song “Look for the bare necessities, the simple bare necessities Forget about your worries and your strife….. The bare necessities of life will come to you” (1lyrics). If broken down it is easily seen that this song can be connected easily to the secret. In fact it directly relates to one of my favorite parts of the secret and that is gratitude. Be happy for the things in life right now be grateful for the “bare necessities” because these are the things that are important in life. The fun part about being grateful for the things already present in life is that it creates happiness and that feeling of happiness according to the secrets “Law of Attraction” (3secret) says that happiness and good feels attract more of the same, sadly the inverse is also true but if a person takes the advice in the Jungle Book and looks for the bare necessities in life and are grateful for those necessities they will attract more abundance then they ever thought possible.
Disney did not only infuse the music in his films with his philosophy he included it in every aspects of his movies right down to the characters that make up the movie. The best example of this in jungle book (2jungle book) is the character Baloo the bear. This is a character that is happy go lucky and doesn’t have a worry in the world and he acts that way for the majority of the movie; therefore it makes sense that out of all the movie this is the character with the least stress and also the character that ends up saving the day and the main character Mowgli, the man cub. Now looking at the character shercon the villain of the entire story the focus of this character is only one thing and that thing is to kill Mowgli he focuses on a negative mood and purpose he may seem to have power at first, but a creature with so much negative energy can only attract more of the same. So it makes sense that in the film when Shercon gets the chance to accomplish his goal of killing Mowgli he is stopped, and in a Walt Disney film this is the only ending possible because that is his philosophy and it is one that works. As Henry Ford once said “Whether you think you can or you can’t, either way you are right.”(3Secret) Another Character that Shows Walt Disney’s and the Secret’s Philosophy Is the Main Character Mowgli. In this story when Mogly is down, sad, and refusing to go back to the man village all his energy is negative. This results in many bad events happening to him he gets abducted multiple times, and like in the secret he is not in control of his own life so a lot of bad things happen to him he is not controlling his life so it is left up to chance and chance did not work out so well for Mowgli. However when he focuses on the positive he finds his way back to his own people and prospers. This again is congruent with the ideas in the secret and with the ideas of Walt Disney that man can accomplish anything.
The songs and characters may be the heart and soul of this story, but without a good plot none of it would make any sense. That is why the plot is the last important piece where Walt imparted his words of wisdom. The plot in this story is one that is pretty simple, but also very well written. Mowgli the man cub must leave the jungle and return to the man village, he does not wish to do so and he fights it with all his being, but is forced to try to go anyway because if he does not it is believed that he will be killed. Mowgli is a positive child prone to happiness and courage so he survives and wins his right to stay in the jungle. The interesting part is that in the jungle as he grows up he could never prosper, so when he gets the opportunity to stay in the jungle he sees a beautiful girl and chooses to go where he belongs. This fits because of his positive attitude his life becomes more abundant then ever before.
I believe that if we follow the philosophy of Disney and The Secret and believe in ourselves and that man can accomplish anything if he/she only believes that it is possible the world will be a much more abundant and blissful place. A reminder for me to follow this path is in one of my favorite animated movies “The Jungle Book” the songs the characters and the plot all remind me and the world to be positive! The last words I would like to impart to you Mrs. Boresen are simple “look for the bare necessities in life and the necessities in life will come to you.”(jungle2)

In my 4-H career There have been too many opportunities to count; however, There has been a few that I have taken full advantage of, swine production and shooting sports are those opportunities
in these projects, and I have learned a great deal about hard work and doing what needs to be done to succeed. Through 4-H I have achieved more then I ever thought possible.
If I have learned anything in 4-H it is that Hard work and dedication are important, and a person who is willing to work hard will succeed. In my 4-H career I was fortunate enough to compete in the national shotgun contest, only the top six contestants at the state contest get to go to nationals, and I was captain of the Colorado Sate team. I practiced for years spending countless hours on the range sometimes five days a week to hopefully do well enough at state to get the chance to go to nationals,
this was a chance of a life time and I was determined to do well, and I did do well our team was Reserve Champions in the trap shooting contest this was better than the Colorado team had ever done.
We did very well because we put in the time and work that necessary to make us successful.
The other activity I have enjoyed in 4-H is swine production over the years I have had man class winning hogs at boulder county fair. I have enjoyed the challenge of raising a quality show animal, and It taught me how to be a responsible caretaker of my animals and that a little extra time and effort working with my animal goes a long way.
In 4-H I have learned many skills that not only benefit me in the 4-H program but will help me later in life. I have learned to always try my hardest no matter what I am doing. I have learned that the difference between someone who succeeds and someone who does not is that little extra effort to do the job right. 4-H has made me the honest determined person I am today, and with the skills I have learned I am sure I can succeed in anything I put my mind to.

Hope
In my life, the past few years, there has been one word that defined me and even my very existence and that word is hope. Hope in its noun form as defined by Dictionary.com is the feeling that what is wanted can be had, or that events will turn out for the best. Hope in the verb form of the word is defined as believing desiring or trusting that something will happen. I like to define the word very simply as trusting that things will be ok and that even though there are hard times in life there will also be better times. As Albert Einstein once said, “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.” Our world lives on hope. It lives on the dream for better times and the promise of something better.
The reason this word has so much meaning to me is that I have needed hope in my life. Two years ago I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. This is a disease that can cause excruciating pain and weaken the body beyond belief, and if left untreated can cause colon cancer the second most deadly kind of cancer in today’s world. For me this was a devastating blow, being a hard headed take on anything teenage football player. The idea of me bleeding internally and needing immediate medical attention was unimaginable. I was put on a number of treatments that seemed to work for a short time but these treatments only delayed the inevitable. On April 30, 2010 I was admitted to the urgent care with a 102 fever caused by dehydration, a direct result of my condition. At this point in time I was told that the inflammation in my colon was too severe, and my best option was to have my entire colon removed as soon as possible. This would happen in a three step process requiring three separate surgeries. I was freaked out about what was to come, but it was my only option if I was going to relieve the terrible pain that I had lived with up to that point in time. So we scheduled the surgeries that would consume The summmer of my junior year. In May, I had my first surgery. They disconnected my colon from the rest of my body and gave me a colostomy bag. This was honestly one of the hardest times in my life because I was mentally drained, stressed, and physically weak from the surgery process. At this point I was at a low in pain and feeling as if it would never end. The only thing that sustained me through that time in my life was of course family, but also the hope that someday I would feel better. This hope was so important to me, that when I felt there was no hope for me to ever be normal again, I had a mental break down. For me to keep going and working to get better I had to know that there was a light at the end of the tunnel I needed the dream of something besides pain. When I lost that dream ,even for just a little while, I lost hope and when I lost hope I became someone I did not know, someone severely depressed. That fact of no hope is hard to handle for anyone, and I was lucky that it lasted only a short while. A person with no hope is a person with no happiness.
Interesting enough the word hope originated in Greek times. The philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche, took the position that Zeus, the god of all gods in Greek mythology, created hope so that no matter how much evil and torment a man endured he would not throw his life away. Instead, because of hope he would continue to torment himself again and again. From Friedrich’s point of view hope was actually the most evil of all evils because it prolongs a man’s torment (3.answers). This opinion fits with the ancient Greek fable about Pandora. In Greek mythology when Pandora opened Pandora’s Box she let out all evil including lust envy and greed. Hope was considered to be worst of all because its effect is far more powerful then any of the evils in the world. Hope can be defined in many different ways and, in Ancient Grease it was looked upon as something negative, but when studying this word I found an analogy that was intriguing to me. Consider for a moment a few prisoners of war in a ghastly filthy prisoner of war camp. The first prisoner has hope ,and never gives up hope and against all odds he plans and executes a successful escape. Now consider a second prisoner, a man who only waits wishes and prays for freedom, but never really has genuine hope that it is possible and consiquently never escapes. Now consider a third prisoner, who gives up all hope of freedom he becomes depressed, lifeless and dies in prison. There are many different views on hope, but in my life, and in lives of many people who have gone through hardships like mine, hope is not just important but essential.
Now consider your own life, I realize that everyone’s experiences are different, but imagine a life with no hope that means no dreams of better things like a promotion or that dream vacation. Without dreams there can be no goals nothing to shoot for therefore there would be no reason to strive for someting better no reason to try to achieve anything, and if there is nothing to strive for ,nothing to achieve is there really any reason to live your life at all? Refer back to the prisoners in the Prisoner of War Camp one that has true hope of escape in his heart and so he plans and against all odds achieves it, and another with absolutely no hope of freedom in him dies in prison. If there is any question on the importance of hope in life just ask yourself this question. Which prisoner would you rather be?

During this time I was also a starting varsity nose guard on a play off contending football team and Captain of a 2nd place national shooting sports team.
I have worked hard in high school to take advantage of as many opportunities as I can; now I have the opportunity to go to college and study mechanical engineering. I am very exited to start my studies and use the skills that I learn in college to start a rewarding career designing new equipment that will make the agricultural community I love just a little bit better.

Essay for ROTC scholarship

The ROTC program was first introduced to me through my local recruiter. When I head about the various opportunities the programs offer, I realized that I am the perfect fit for the Army ROTC program, because I have leadership skills that I want to cultivate, I will serve my country with the highest honor, and I will become a valuable citizen as a result.
I wish to enroll in the ROTC program for a few reasons, which are pretty simple but also important to me. I want to learn and become a better leader, to serve my country, and to achieve my full potential and be all that I can be.
My initial reason for wanting to enroll in the ROTC program is to use the leadership skills that I have received in my experiences at Roosevelt High School and use them to better my self in the programs the Army offers. I have had a few leadership roles in high school, for example I was Vice President of one of the most successful FFA (Future Farmers of America) chapters in the state, Captain of a Reserve Champion national trap team, and the starting varsity nose guard on a football team in the playoffs. I did well in these leadership roles, but through the ROTC I can learn how to lead people in an even more effective way the Army way this is a skill that will be useful to in many aspects of my life and is something I am eager to learn. I have always admired the service and the men and women I think it is a noble thing to serve ones country and I would like to do my part. I think that the ROTC is the best way that I can serve my country, because I can use my abilities to think critically and rationally to figure out any problem I think that valuable perspective as well as my ability to communicate that perspective will be an asset to the ROTC program.
Through the ROTC I will use what I have already learned in high school to further my education. I am a dedicated student, ranked 7th in my class, I have a passion for learning and I take my education seriously. This attitude will help me attain a mechanical engineering degree, which someday I will use to design new and more efficient farm equipment to make the agricultural community that I was raised in even stronger.

Because I have worked with you on the basketball court as well as in class, you can attest to my good work ethic as well as my good personal qualities.

As my coach and History Instructor, you are familiar with my grades, my strong work ethic, and my determination to do things to the best of my ability. I think you have good sense weather I have the qualities worthy of receiving a scholarship. I have been a member of the 4-H program for almost ten years and have been active at not just the county but state and national levels as well. I am well qualified for this scholarship and I think you can speak well for my character.

Essay for ROTC scholarship

   I wish to enroll in the ROTC program for a few reasons, which are pretty simple but also important to me. I want to learn and become a better leader, to serve my country, and to achieve my full potential and be all that I can be.
    My initial reason for wanting to enroll in the ROTC program is to become a better leader. I have had a few leadership roles in high school for example I was Vice President of one of the most successful FFA( Future Farmers of America) chapters in the state, Captain of a Reserve Champion national trap team, and the starting varsity nose guard on a football team in the playoffs. I did well in these leadership roles, but through the ROTC I could hone my skills and become an invaluable asset not just in the military but to my community as well.
     I am also interested in the ROTC program to serve my country. I have always admired the service and the men and women I think it is a noble thing to serve ones country and I would like to do my part. I think that the ROTC is the best way that I can serve my country because I can use the skills I already have to build on and become an important tool that can contribute a unique and valuable perspective.
     The last reason why I would like to be a part of ROTC is to achieve my full potential. Through the ROTC I will use what I have already learned in high school to further my education. I am a dedicated student ranked 7^th in my class I have a passion for learning and I take my education seriously. This attitude will help me attain a mechanical engineering degree, which someday I hope to use to design new and more efficient farm equipment to make the agricultural community that I was raised in even better.
    In closing I think that ROTC is a program with a lot of opportunities and something that I feel I can contribute greatly to.
